My Beliefs

Sharing this in the hopes of finding my ideal client. What's my ideal client? I am looking for people who have a good idea of what they want, who are open minded and enjoy sharing their ideas and beliefs with me. Here's more of what I think, beliefs philosophies etc.

~I believe that birth is not an illness or a condition, but an amazing, wonderful, exciting event that is normal, natural and healthy. Birth is not an emergency it is an emergence.

~Pregnancy, labor and birth have a profound effect on you  and your family. It is an experience that is never forgotten. It’s transformative and powerful. My role in labor is not to save or take over. I hold space, I nurture and I enable the partner (whomever they are)to be what the birthing person needs. I protect your neocortex (You will find out more about this in my Childbirth Education Class.) I care for both you and your partner.

~A pregnant person intuitively and instinctively knows how to labor and give birth. Those caring and supporting them, need to trust and respect that. It’s our job to hold this space as sacred and respect the journey as it unfolds. Only people who trust and believe in you and your body and your baby's ability to know how to be born should share that space with you.

~Your confidence and ability to give birth is either enhanced or diminished by those who care for you and where you birth. The witnesses to your work can influence your progress. Even those who care for you, if they do not trust the process can hinder it.

~You have the right to give birth free from routine medical interventions. If interventions become necessary, all information needed to support and understand the intervention, should be provided. Informed consent is your right and should be addressed in a respectful way.

~You have the right to choose where and with whom you give birth.

Education empowers you to make informed choices in health care, to assume responsibility for your health and to trust your intuition, instinct and inner wisdom. You deserve to receive information about birth, your right’s and choices outside of the institution where you will birth your children.

Consultations:

I can talk about birth and pregnancy all day, and have been known to. Between teaching over two thousand doulas around the world and hosting a parenting podcast, I kind of already do. Click here to schedule a Facetime/Zoom consultation and ask questions about what hiring a doula looks like, whether it’s with me or not. This service is donation based.

Let’s Meet In Real Life

While I prefer to meet in person for our first visit, I understand we all lead such busy lives. In light of that I offer online Facetime/Skype/Google Hangout Consultation to ensure that we are a good match for each other. Yes, for each other. While some parents and doulas think this initial meetup is an interview for the doula, it’s an interview of the parents for me.

Why? Well that’s easy. I deeply believe that it is absolutely important that we get along, that we see eye to eye. We need to vibe and have chemistry. I don’t want to be something you think you need. I want to be someone you know you want to be by your side and who will have your back. The someone who will go to “the deep end of the pool” with you.

Why? Because birth can happen easiest and most safely when the person giving birth trusts the people in their birthing environment. I ask all my clients to interview a minimum of three doulas before deciding on hiring me.  Some doulas have told me that this is bad business. But here’s a secret, I don’t look at birth like a business. This is a sacred beautiful moment in your life that, will transform you ,that you allow me to be a part of and I am honored every time. It’s so special to me and it’s what I bring with me when I train other doulas. It’s the very reason  I don’t take more than 2 births a month.

We can discuss on how I can support you and your partner on the day of your birth! Once you know I’m the doula for you, I will send you an Intake form with a Contract and an invoice will be sent out to you. It must be filled out, signed along with a deposit within 7 days to ensure my time is blocked for you around your due date.

Your Virtual Doula

Sometimes you can't have a doula present (some hospitals only allow one support person). I also understand that a birth doula doesn't fit in everyone's budget or preferences for birth.

Even before covid I have served as a virtual doula for clients in other cities, states and countries. I have been called down the street by neighbors who knew I was a doula to sit with women in labor who had planned a hospital birth and couldn't get out the door in time.**

  • 3 ZOOM prenatal visits where you will create birth preferences and a plan for postpartum
  • Up to 12 hours of text and phone support before and during labor.
  • 1 in home or virtual postpartum visit after the baby is here.

  • I will help you find resources in your neck of the woods (world)

Take my mini Childbirth Education online and then ask me anything! I want to make sure you and your partner understand what's normal and not normal in labor.

I want you to know you are not alone and you have someone in your corner. Call me today for a consultation and lets see if we are a good match.

** I am not a midwife. I do not catch babies. Pizzas are delivered babies are not. (Heard this phrase from Anna

What My Clients Had to Say

Rhiannon LeParmentier

Gena offered support before during and after that we couldn't have done without. She was reassuring and really trusted we could do it. I can't imagine not having her a part of our team and now she feels like family

I didn't know what a Doula was until I met Gena. After meeting her, I describe doulas as a cross between an angel, birth professional and best friend.

Childbirth/Precipitous OOH Birth for Firemen/Police Departments

This is one of my favorite things! Over the years I have had the opportunity to talk to Policemen and Firemen about births they've attended or showing up right after a birth. The stories are generally the same, then when I tell them what I teach and how I teach it, they all tell me how they wish they knew more about the birth process and how it would be done at home or in a birth center and about practices out side of an "emergency". Many of them appreciated my old bumper sticker (I need a new one);
BIRTH IS AN EMERGENCE. NOT AN EMERGENCY
