The Doula's Doula

Known world-wide for her Rebozo instruction, Gena Garcia is holding space for Doula's to find their higher selves.

About me pages crack me up. I always feel like I never really get to know the person the ABOUT PAGE is about! It’s always so stiff and professional. Well, I am the opposite of stiff and professional. I am laid back and informal. Sure I am professional, but in a fun way. As seriously as I take my work, I just can’t take myself too seriously. I came into the birth world like so many doulas do, right after my first birth. Since that experience I have been obsessed with what parents weren’t being told. I immediately opened a maternity store with my sister, as an “answer” to the problem. Which turned into a radio program for parents (now in it’s 15th year), which turned into my online show. I became a doula a few years after my eldest was born and the rest as they say is history. Three kids later I am still raging against the machine.
I am happiest when I am teaching. Whether it's with a couple in their home sharing what to expect. Or teaching 8 couples in a Childbirth Education or an event room  full of Doulas and Midwives at a birth conference. It's what I live for. During the pandemic when I couldn't teach I was so sad. So many of my friends said "get a real job" (thanks pal), sell real estate, I know they meant well. But my closest friends know that if I wasn't teaching I would be so sad.

Things That Make Me , ME

I like to think that I am a work in progres, but if you are looking to have me as your doula or to be mentored by me or to learn from me I hoe this little list off things I have done will give you a glimpse into who I am. I have been a doula for 15 years. I have been a midwifery assistant for 2 and have attended over 600 births. I have been a doula trainer for 10 years. I served on the Board of Directors for Attachment Parenting International for 5+ years. I hosted an AM then FM radio show which turned into a podcast for the past 15 years  (total).  I hosted a Local Cable Access show called Mommy Matters for years. I am the ex President of Texans for Midwifery. I have written for various publications, online magazines, print magazines, newspapers and journals. I have made television appearances, and have been a guest on numerous birth podcasts (BIrth Monopoly, Indiebirth, Birthful, Denise Bolds and Birth Kweens). I have spoken at numerous birth conferences from TRUST BIRTH to Birth and Beyond. I taught my rebozo class at the world famous birth center in Tennessee, THE FARM. I have taught over 2,800 doulas  and counting. I was awarded the Mommies Matter award by the Childbirth Resource Network in Fresno California in 2007. I am also a Rotary Scholar and was the recipient of the 2015 Jeannine Parvati Memorial Rising Star Birth Keeper award. I was born in California and have lived in Pamplona Spain, Albuquerque New Mexico, and now resides in Austin Texas with her four children.

Workshops and Classes

From parents to Doulas to Midwives I have a class or a workshop for you. I teach Childbirth Education Classes locally in Austin, Texas and Online/Virtually via Zoom for expectant families.
I also teach Doula Trainings all over the world. I have my Rebozo Workshop and my MINI BIRTH CONFERENCE: FLOCK YEAH which has been held in 22 different cities in the US and Canada. I LOVE hosting Flock Yeah conferences. They are so fun and informal and intimate. I get to teach alongside dear friends in the birth world that I admire and respect deeply. From Whapio, to Lesley Everest, to Ina May Gaskin, Robbie E. Davis-Floyd, Ph.D., Patrick Houser and more! You haven't attended a birth conference like this before. Our attendees have told us that these weekends are transformative and that they walk away rethinking what they had learned about birth till then. Watch this video that Lesley, Whapio and I shot the day after a weekend of Flocking with like minded birth pros in San Diego to get a feel for what to expect.  I hope we see you at our next Flocking!
Rebozo Workshops
I hesitate to call these workshops "rebozo" workshops because it's NOT just about the rebozo and when it is, it is NOT how to use the rebozo as a "tool". The rebozo is NOT a tool. My hope is that at end of the workshop, my students leave with a newfound respect and love for the rebozo they never had before. This class is more than a workshop it's a hands-on, laugh factory, where you will have epiphanies and re-evaluate what you've learned to date. You will make new friends and leave relaxed, refreshed and on a oxytocin high. Don't take my class if you aren't ok with new ideas and the occasional F bomb. I am rowdy, raunchy, ridiculous and very vulnerable when I am teaching. If you are down with all that I'll see you at my next workshop.

Podcasting

My show was born 15 years ago in Fresno California after spending 2 hours  talking to my ONE Customer of the day. She left with new ideas and lots of info. My husband at the time said, "It's a shame you don't have your own radio show where you could talk to thousands of people for 2 hours instead of one person for 2. I thought to myself, "YES! I DO NEED MY OWN SHOW!" A week later I had my own AM show, every thursday for 2 hours. After two years we were on Pacifica Radio for another 2 years. Then we moved to Austin Texas and I couldn't find a radio station to carry my show.
THE PODCAST BEGINNING
After yet another rejection from yet another local station, my ex said, "maybe we could do a podcast." What the hell is a podcast I asked (11 years ago). He explained we could do it from our apartment and didn't have to pay a sitter to go to the radio station. LOL! I was in! Plus on the radio I knew for sure my mom and grandma were listening. Now we could see HOW many people were listening and from where!

GUESTS
Since the beginning the whole purpose of the show was to let parents know what they weren't being told by the mainstream media. The show was NEVER and to this day is NOT about me knowing anything. I am merely your humble host and I invite doctors, midwives, doulas, authors and other experts on pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and parenting to answer your questions. Some of our guests have been; Marsden Wagner, Peggy O'mara of Parenting Magazine Dr Sarah Buckley, Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, PhD, IBCLC, FAPA, Dr. James McKenna, Samsarah Morgan, Jennie Joseph, LM, CPM , Barbara Nicholson, Dr. Stuart Fischbein, MD OB/GYN and more!

Coaching/Mentoring/Friending

I called this Coaching /Mentoring/ Friending because I feel like if I "coach" parents we end up becoming friends. If I mentor someone we end up becoming friends. I love it, it makes my world smaller and better all at once. I learn every time I teach so all that happens for me when I coach, and share is I get better at it and I make a new friend. I love my life. I am available to mentor or coach in person and online.
WHAT TO EXPECT
With all that being said about how I feel about coaching and what I get out of it, I want to let YOU know what to expect from a coaching session with me. First and foremost I keep things incredibly informal. I think that stems from my utter refusal to take myself seriously. DO I think what I am teaching is important? Of course, but I just can't teach in a formal and stuffy way.
What does that mean for you? It means I keep things simple. And even big ideas, take for instance, one of my workshops covers how quantum physics relates to birth. Quantum Physics? Yes. You will understand what I'm trying to convey and we will be laughing (sometimes crying)while I do it. Your participation shapes our meetings. The more questions you ask and the more we talk the more you get out of it.

Frequently asked questions

You Have Questions, I Have Answers

Won't a Doula Take My Partners Place

Oh HECK NO! That is not how I doula. My goal is: if you have a willing partner then my job is to make sure that lucky person; knows what to expect, how to help provide comfort, knows what's normal and what isnt. I like to think of myself as a first base coach. I am there to run plays and "practice" with you. Then when the big day/game comes I am there to remind you of what we practiced /plays. I can't play the game for you, but I can provide support and reminders. But I have zero desire to replace anyone. This is YOUR day that you will remember, this is for you and the person you want most by your side. THAT person is as important to me as you are. Click here to watch a Testimonial from one of my clients, here a Dad shares why hiring a doula was the best money he's spent.

Do I need to be a Doula to take your Rebozo Workshop?

Absolutely not. My requirement to take any of my workshops is:  Are you a birth nerd? Do you love expectant parents and their families? Weather you are a seasoned birth professional or someone who wants to know more about birth my workshops are for you. As a doula I share how to use the rebozo with my clients. Some of them have never been to a birth or even held a baby. I have had birth pros who 'thought they knew all about the rebozo' their words, tell me that after taking my workshop they had a completely different outlook on what the rebozo is and how it was so much more than they had thought previously. Here's a quote from a student that sort of sums up what I hope to do for those seasoned doulas.  "I just took Gena's class, and wanna say that, you know I've actually in my doula training learned a little bit about the rebozo and tried some techniques out, but there's a difference between really learning the grammar of a language and actually being able to have conversations and I feel like I really walked away from this being able to have that conversation."- Madeline Doula, Vancouver BC, Canada.

What are Your Thoughts on Appropriation?

This is an excellent question and I have been answering it for years now. I am going to share a quote from Kelsey Holmes of the Greenheart Club(do read this article).
"It is important to understand, however, that there is a difference between appreciation and appropriationAppreciation is when someone seeks to understand and learn about another culture in an effort to broaden their perspective and connect with others cross-culturally.  Appropriation on the other hand, is simply taking one aspect of a culture that is not your own and using it for your own personal interest.  Appropriation could mean of purchasing a piece of jewelry or clothing that may have important cultural significance to that culture, but simply using it as a fashion statement.  It could be taking a photo of a ritual ceremony simply for the sake of getting as many likes on Facebook as possible.  Regardless, taking a part of another culture without understanding what it truly means can be harmful not only to those whose culture you are using but also to those with whom you share it."  Program Assistant As a Mexican woman (2nd generation on my Moms side and my Fathers Family is from Las Cruces, NM which was Mexico until the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo of 1848. His mom's family goes back for generations before 1848), I LOVE sharing the beauty and sacredness of the rebozo. I have been chastised for sharing it with non-Mexican people. I have spent thousands of dollars over the years supporting Mexican and Guatemalan families by purchasing rebozos for my classes and students. I can't imagine not buying from or supporting these indigenous weavers and I can't imagine not sharing the rebozo with people who work with families during the time of birth. For 15 years I've received letters and emails from past students sharing with me what a difference the rebozo made in their clients births. Photos of laboring people being comforted and supported by the rebozo. Photos from doulas who used it on their families. Many lovely letters with photos of doulas with children with special needs being supported by the rebozo. I cannot imagine NOT sharing my love and appreciation of something so incredible from my heritage with people who want to help families during and around the time of birth. Here is more information about this topic.

Does Everyone Need a Doula?

Shockingly I don't know that everyone needs a doula. I know some of my peers would be surprised by me saying this. However I believe there are some people out there who would do best unencumbered with ANYONE in their birthing space. Is this rare? Sort of, but it's the reason I cannot honestly say not EVERYONE needs one. Do most people need one?  Well, I will say having had 4 children and having had a doula with three of them, I personally, cannot imagine giving birth without one. At my last birth my doula wasn't trained by any doula training body. She was our nanny turned great friend. When I had my fourth I knew thousands of doulas and the one person I wanted was her. She knew me she loved me, she would make me feel calm and care for my spouse and kids. Exactly what I wanted. I think different people need different things from their doula. That's why it's so important that I am a good match with my clients. The idea that one could be the right/best doula for ANYONE is ludicrous to me. I can't be the best doula to everyone anymore than I could be the best friend to anyone in the world. I look forward to interviewing new clients and seeing if we click or not. If we don't it's ok! I have a long list of doulas in my area that are amazing. They are not my competition they are my peers and I want them to succeed as much as I want my would-be clients to be happy. This is my community that you are giving birth in. Whether you hire me or not, if I help you find a doula that will help you give birth the way that you want, then I have done my duty to my community. Doulas change the world one birth at a time. Whether we attend them in person or not.
